Letter to The Editor: Stefanik has worked to protect dairy farms

To the Editor:
As dairy farmers across the north country struggle to plant their crops in a wet spring, they have been hit with another blow. The milk checks many received showed a large charge for balancing due in no small part to the loss of markets in Canada.
Canada recently changed its classification system of milk, barring the import of dairy products that New York farms produced. This market loss has had a negative effect on the prices we receive. Dairy farmers are dependent upon exports with 15 percent to 18 percent of milk being exported to world markets.
I want to thank U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik’s efforts to support New York farms. She has written to President Donald Trump asking that dairy considerations be included in any NAFTA discussions. We all need to support Rep. Stefanik’s efforts to protect our dairy farms.
