Last living Mohawk code talker receives New York State Liberty Medal from state Legislature

Louis Levi Oakes — the last living Mohawk code talker — was awarded the New York State Liberty Medal from the state Legislature on Friday. Sen. Betty Little, R-Queensbury, presented the medal to Oakes at a ceremony held at the American Legion Post 1479 in Akwesasne. “It’s a real honor and a privilege to present this award today,” said Little, speaking to a small crowd gathered at Post 1479.

Stefanik visits truss manufacturer Fabco in Watertown

Standing close together to hear over the noise of saws and nail guns, U.S. Rep. Elise M. Stefanik, R-Willsboro and Daniel C. Tontarski, co-owner of Fabco Roof and Floor Trusses manufacturing, discussed the benefits and challenges of running a small manufacturing operation in Watertown.

The House Armed Services Committee approved a $716 billion spending plan on Thursday. The annual defense reauthorization is one of the largest legislative packages Congress tackles every year, containing a blend of defense and national security policies and fiscal proposals. The final package includes billions in equipment upgrades, an increase in active duty troops, strengthened sanctions on the Russian arms industry and efforts to combat Chinese cyberwarfare.
